hi everyone,

just bought a scr1 and its in a bit of a state. the hollowtech bb came in pieces and when i turn the steerer there is some awful crunching sounds. it has also been stored in a woodworking room so is covered in wood dust.

ive spent all afternoon on and off trying to figure the year (2007/8 ish?) of the bike and locate a manual, to no avail, below is a photo,

$_86 (4).JPG

also, ive broke this part (photo below) from the bb are they easy to source or do they just come supplied with a new bb? its the plastic cover that fits over the bearing housing just inside the cup.

also, the seller claimed that the wheelset was special "they were on the first run of scr1's and then giant changed them and placed cheaper wheels on the later models", but all i can locate on the web this past week is people have disdain for the wheels. they look nice but the spoke count seems on the low side being 20 spokes to a wheel, should i pass the wheels on, keep them, or put them on a raleigh scorpio, photo below,

also, finally, the seller claimed but wasn't sure on the groupset, most of it is 105, but the brake calipers only have shimano written on, does anyone know if these are 105 calipers?

im thinking once all the components are washed up ill swap the 105 bits with my sora bits on my fav racer, which is 9speed 11 - 32 and, not sure of the giants cassette yet, apart from 10 speed because i cant locate a spec sheet for it, but its got less teeth than the merida cassette and the easiest gear, i.e. the largest ring on the cassette is physically smaller than the meridas.

is it worth swapping the bits over? i wont be swapping the front mech because its bolted onto the giant and strapped onto the merida, and i wont be swapping the cranks or bb as theyre different from the merida, the giant being hollotech. so just the brakes and levers and the rear mech and buy a new rear cassette because i live in hilly newcastle.

thanks in advance. cheers mark

Bit of info here >>http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/scr.1.0/157/15146/#overview<< It does appear to be a 2007 model as you say with the early wheels, I suspect they dropped them because of poor strength issues rather than a "cheaper" set on the revised 2007 model. there are a few specs on the giant site but not a lot.
  • FRAME Fluid Formed ALUXX aluminium
  • FORK T700 carbon composite, aluminium steerer
  • BRAKES Shimano BR600 long reach
  • WHEELS Xero XSR-3
  • DRIVETRAIN Shimano 105 30 speed STI and mechs
  • SIZES 42, 46.5, 50, 55.5, 58.5cm

thanks dave. i was so close i found the 2005 model on that site )

yellow tim, i was wanting the full spec just to follow, or know the bike. its a medium frame which i have no experience of but sat on it without pedals and quite liked the geometry, especially with the seat raised, but i thought if i fixed it as a working bike rather than sell the spare parts i could try out the size for a while. all this year ive been buying large or xl bikes. i quite prefer xl even though im just under six foot, but i cycle in walking boots which add 2 inches to my height. the reason for walking boots is i hurt my back 8 years ago and they support my ankles in a preventative alexander technique kind of strategy. ive tried both types of cleats and shoes but i dislike the danger they pose cycling in a city most of the time.

but i had to think about your question because ive spent the last hour checking over the bike, removing wheels and things and i actually dont think i need a manual lol. thanks tim.

just read alot of opinion on the wheelset and i need some Mavic Aksium's rather than hold onto the xsr3's.

re the cassette - you don't need a spec sheet - just count the teeth!

yes ive done that. i was just interested in a clear spec sheet. thanks.

ive took all the components of the frame this morning, and someone may have seen this before, but before i removed the bars, cables and stem, there was some awful crunching noises seemingly from the headset, but once the bars and spacers were off the forks and headset moved very smoothly. which was a fantastic discovery. im assuming there may have been grit in the spacers? i popped the stem, spacers and bars back on but without tightening, turned a few times and the crunching noises had still disappeared. anyone have a similar experience regarding what may have been the cause of the crunching?

the frame has began its ebay journey if anyone is interested,
