For a while now been considering the idea of a road bike, never actually used one before but been into of all places "cash converters" and they have a Triban 3 for about £170 second hand although looked perfect size and appeared sound am wondering is it actually worth buying second hand in this case or would be better to just stump up the cash and buy new? any opinion welcome ,thanks

Go for it , bloody good bikes at full price so at that price a bargain and well worth the money

Buy new. That way you'll avoid the embarrassing possibility of someone leaping out in the road as you pedal along on your Cash Converters bargain bike and claiming that it had been nicked from their front yard a few weeks earlier.

Cash Converters, being a retail shop, have a legal obligation to ensure clean title to anything they sell, besides there are thousands of those about,& they all look the same.

Is the bike in question standard or modified?
I can't see the point in modding a Triban, sell it on & upgrade the lot,if you want a better spec.

well I haven't bought it and its still there, although I will say half the staff in said shop were sacked before Christmas for taking stolen goods they are more carefull now than before. But the main reason was never using a road bike before wasn't sure would be able to get used to gear shifting system.

Avoid it and buy new.

The triban, whilst a most excellent bike (for this money) is prone to the odd hub issues (check our owners thread at http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/triban-3-owners-club.121260/) which seem to revolve around a lack of grease on set up.However the warranty is sometimes a real blessing.

Very good spec for the price though, Btwin make their own brakes and wheels so its tricky to compare but I've recommended them to many a mate, a couple have taken me up and invested without regret.

I was unsure re: gears on a road bike as I had only ridden mountain bikes with 'grip shift' or 'dials' as I would call them.

After a couple of rides I soon found myself switching easier, and in better time, and now it just comes naturally. I find it a lot easier than grip-shift which is what I only remember using previously
