Hi
one of my friends has bought a new bike (his first road bike- a nice Boardman carbon ) and is keen to enter this Sportive (19 October). There are 2 routes 100k or 100 miles.
He has asked me to enter with him.
I have been riding for about 3 or 4 years but usually solo or sometimes with another friend who is of similar ability. I have never done a Sportive or even been interested in joining a local club ride before.
Mainly because i dont want to embarrass myself i suppose. I've always thought myself too slow. I know a lot of clubs social rides say they will go at the pace of the slower riders and will not leave anyone behind....but i dont want to be that guy holding everyone up. I am quite heavy and really struggle on hills.
I know this is a Sportive rather tha na club ride and distance wise i could manage the 100k without too much worry. I usually go out 2 or 3 times a week during the summer and do anywhere from 25-50 miles. The terrain around here is relatively flat just the odd incline/hill and i average 16-17 mph depending on route/weather etc. Its just the pace the worries me. Should i go for it and enter? I know its not a race but i dont want to embarrass myself.
