Sorry, in advance. I know you've asked specifically about two bikes but I'm not sure that those are what you should be looking at, from the bit I've quoted above.

You might find a bike designed a bit more for comfort will be even better. The 2.1 and the Defy are both performance bikes - for instance, Trek say of the 2.1 "Speedy Performance For The Sporting Enthusiast", rather than "comfortable style for those with bad backs" - which may be a step too far if you are looking for comfort and will not be racing.

Something like the Spesh Secteur Elite for a road bike, or maybe go for one of the many cyclo-cross bikes. They have an even more relaxed position and the larger tyres help cushion blows from bad tarmac, which might help depending on the exact nature of your back problem.

You can't tell comfort, fit or suitability from sitting on them, you need to ride them, for at least 30 minutes, on the road. If the shop doesn't let you have a test ride, go to a different shop. You are spending a lot of money, you have specific requirements, you need to ride the bikes before you commit to something which you can't ride.

IMO,

Take a look at the Spesh Secteur Elite .A lot of bike for less than a 'grand'.And with a decent saddle a very good allday bike .But be very careful .It's soooo fast .
