Trek 7.3 FX 2016 vs Pinnacle Neon 1 2017

Both look awful with awful components.
Sorry.

Evans offer no hassle test rides (just need photo ID and a bank card). Go try them out and decide which you prefer  specs aren't the be all and end all, see which riding experience works for you

Vickster is wise - go try them and see which you prefer.

That's a good shortlist, two decent machines, so you're doing well so far. The componentry isn't brilliant, as to be expected at that price, but it's perfectly functional stuff.

Thanks for your replies so far! I've actually test ridden the neon, feels like a good ride to me. Yet to try the trek tho.

My main concern really is that of reliability. Don't want to invest in a bike that falls apart after litte use!

Also considering the giant escape 1 (2016), but I guess that'd also fall in the same category in terms of component quality?

I have a 2009 Trek 7.3 FX and it has been a superb bike to be fair.
I have done a lot of riding on it including a Whitehaven to Whitby C2C.
The standard seat is crap though. I fitted a gel cover and it made it bearable.
There are some rumours that suggest that the BB is a bit crap, but mine is still going strong with no noise or play.
The only issue that I have had is a weird clicking noise from the front wheel (that sounds like there is something loose in the tyre). I tried to get to the bottom of it but never did. I have learned to live with it now.

@Gixxerman The older 7.3s might have come with a carbon fork? The 2016 has an alloy (not necessarily a major issue)...lots of specs have been slightly 'downgraded' over the years to keep the price the same even if parts have gone up in cost

The Trek has a better spec list and is likely to hold more second hand value should you decide to upgrade in the future.

Secondary considerations - if the Pinnacle should happen to simply fit the OP better and give him a better riding experience, then these are moot points.

However, in the event of a tie-breaker they might be worth consideration.

Nope. It had an ally fork.
The Trek archive gives a spec for the 2009 bike as follows.

Frame: FX Alpha Black Aluminum
Fork: FX Alloy w/tapered wall thickness, straight blades, Clix dropouts
Sizes: 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25"
Wheels: Alloy front hub, Shimano RM30 rear hub; Bontrager Nebula, 32-hole rims
Tyres: Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase, 700x32c; 60tpi
Shifters: Shimano EF60 trigger, 8 speed
Front derailleur: Shimano C102
Rear derailleur: Shimano Deore
Crank: Shimano M361 48/38/28 w/chainguard
Cassette: Shimano HG40 11-32, 8 speed
Pedals: Nylon body w/alloy cage
Saddle: Bontrager Nebula
Seatpost: Bontrager Nebula Basic
Handlebar: Bontrager SSR, 25mm rise, 6 degree sweep
Stem: Bontrager SSR, 10 degree
Headset: Aheadset Slimstak w/semi-cartridge bearings, sealed
Brakeset: Avid SD-3 w/Shimano EF60 levers

Not sure how this compares with the 2016 one though.
Apart from having 3 new chains and some brake blocks, mine is as orginal. Tyres will be changed this year from the semi-slick ones to some Bontrager AW1's or AW2's as the semi slicks are a bit slidey in the wet.

Do your inner tube valves have a little screw on nut that sits against the rim? Last time I had a little clicking noise from a wheel that was it.
