Hoping for some advice in choosing a road bike... I'm struggling. Overwhelmed with choice to be honest. So many bikes out there to drool over

At the moment I'm looking at...

Trek 3.1 v Boardman Team Carbon v Scott CR1 Comp

I've had a fitting session and drawings done at LBS... these suggest that the geometry of the Scott and Trek might be better - the Top Tube of the Boardman is a bit longer in comparison.

I like the understated looks of the Boardman. The Trek also looks great and I get club discount on the 3.1 at my LBS. The Scott CR1 has all round 105 new 2011 components and I think may be lighter than the Trek.

Yes I know, "have a test ride"...

Problem is no local LBS has my size in stock of any of them (small B/man; 52cm Trek/Scott)! I'll have to road test a size up.
This will be my first ever turn on drop bars! It just makes the decision seem all the more daunting!

So any input you guys can offer would be appreciated

Thanks.

I currently ride a Boardman Hybrid, and do like the look of the Road bike a lot... on paper.

The main thing that puts me off it is the long top tube, combined with the lack of a pro fitting service that I'd get with the other two bikes at a proper LBS.

The service I got from Halfords was also quite poor - needless to say they've not laid a finger on my hybrid since I bought it. If I were to buy another Boardman I'd get a boxed version.

that is the main problem with boardmans bikes... with the prices going up and the service at halfords still being sh*te it dose make it more difficult for you to happy spend a hefty amount of money on one of there bikes.

you'd have to be happy to size the bike up yourself and you'd pretty much be on your own once you'd brought the bike, im sure warranty claims wouldn't be a problem but servicing etc and the type of service you get from proper LBS you def wouldn't get. that said im still over the moon with my bike, last years model for a grand was great value in my opinon even though service wasn't brilliant.

I reckon id seriously consider a planet x nanolight bike if I were to ever upgrade... they could be worth checking out, again no big brand name or anything but they seem like they know a thing or two and could do a professional fit if you lived in sheffield

Funny you say that - I know someone who's just bought a planet X frame and is moving the running gear from their old b/man.

But for the sake of 10-15% more on the price of the B/man... I'd rather have the proper setup and fitting of the Trek/Scott from the LBS. That is if the hardware is worth it!

forget them and go for a Giant tcr composite 2, far superior ride quality.
Giant actually make the trek and the scott in there factories and the boardmans frames give a very harsh ride

Thanks, I'm all up for more alternatives. Looking at the Giant - the small has a very short seat tube relative to the top tube not that it probably matters. Nice bike... another nice bike. Oh dear! This isn't getting any easier!

The only thing I see happening is my budget creeping upwards into Ultegra territory!

It's been an expensive Bank Holiday!

Finally settled on a Scott CR1 Team after a test ride that had me instantly hooked!

Can't wait to pick it up
