I'd say those are two different beasts, both bikes with good reputations. As a novice rider, I'd say the most important factor comes down to which bike appeals to you. Geometry wise, the Synapse will offer more long distance comfort, with it's curved seat stay design, taller headtube and longer wheelbase. The Trek's frame design is slightly more performance based, though that's unlikely to make a noticeable difference until you pair the bike with a performance engine and then your talking marginal advantage ;) Both framesets have a limited lifetime warranty and the same groupsets. Ultimately you want the bike that inspires you to ride.

Get the one that fits you best.
If they both fit, get the one that makes you smile most.
If they both do, get the one that's cheapest.

same price? You're on your own

Thank you, Andy...very sound advice...

Did you decide/buy over the weekend? If not, another possible consideration - are both available from your LBS (local bike shop)? If yes, then I have nothing more to add to Kestevan's sage advice. If not, then consider going with vendor nearest to you, so any initial problems can be easily sorted. They will become your friends if it is a good LBS.

My first road bike was a Trek 1.5. Good bike for price and spec - now my commuter and rubbish weather bike!. Cannot comment on Synapse other than having a good reputation.
