Hey guys,

I am just trying to get into cycling as I am getting over a series of knee surgeries and need to find a new sport. I have been researching and riding all different kinds of bikes. After riding entry level bikes from brands like Raleigh, Felt, Trek, and Specialized I have come to find that the Trek is most comfortable for me. I started shopping around to try and find 2008 1.2 models, but cannot find any in my size (56). A LBS that I have been going to is selling the 2009 1.2 for $880, which is the steepest price I have seen for the 1.2. But they also have a 2009 1.5 show bike that they said they would be willing to sell to me for the price of the 1.2 at $880. Or I could buy a 2009 1.2 at other stores for around $730.

Is it worth spending the extra $150 for the 1.5 or should I stick with buying a 1.2? I would really appreciate some advice as I am just trying to get into the sport and am trying to learn about everything.

Thanks

I would go for the 1.5 (the frame changes at that price point iirc, i.e. it will have the same frame as the higher models). Gives you a better base for future upgrades, etc. I got the 1.7 recently...

PP - how are you liking the 1.7? I have been looking at it too, but can't decide between it or the Spesh Allez Elite.

Try to ride both bikes,
I have the Trek 1.7 & my son has the Allez Elite,
I find the Trek to be the more comfortable but
he likes the Allez, obviously.
+ the Trek is 105 right through, the Allez has a bit of Tiagra.

I have a Trek 1.2 as a winter bike as it takes mudguards. Excellent bike. If it is the same frame as the 1.5 I would stick with it, and then in a year or two buy another bike (!) so you have a winter/spare

Thanks Alan - I will try both, just need some time on a decent day.

I think the 1.2 is a different frame to the 1.5, 1.7 and 1.9, but happy to be corrected. ;)

To be quite honest, I've hardly been out on it due to weather, holidays, snuffles, etc. I was a bit limited in my choice of bikes in as far as I wanted a triple but not sora shifters. Of all the bikes I tested that fullfilled the criteria, the trek was by far the most comfy for me. It would have normally been completely out of my price range, but I got a pretty substantial discount on it, so it all of a sudden turned into a contender. My mtb is a trek too, they seem to suit me...

Yeah, I probably will end up going with the Trek 1.5 as it seems like it is worth the extra money. I really appreciate your advice.

Thanks
