hi all
im going to get a new chain for my recumbent and in the past when i have had a new chain iv just given it a spray with the wonderful WD40.
but iv seen posts about greasing new chains and dry grease ???? can anyone please give me some advice do i need to do anything with a new chain and if so what would you use and why? or is it ok to just put the chain on and away i go.
the bike will be kept indoors most of the time but used in all weathers and im hoping to build up to doing long distances.

thanks stuee

Dry or wet lube - whichever works for you.

In my experience the grease on a brand new chain is good for the first couple of hundred miles or so (depending on conditions). After that I keep mine clean using the well known mickle method and lubricate with chainsaw oil, which is my current preference (very cheap, attracts less dirt than oils I've used previously and is less prone to flinging off and making a mess).

WD40 is generally not recommended for chains as it's too thin.

For a recumbent, with it's much longer chain, you get less stresses then with a chain on a DF bike, so go with Dry Lube.
After every wet ride, wipe and relube.
Stay away from the WD40.

i imagined that due to its long length it would be under more stress due to the give in each link ??? but thats just how i would Imagen it would work,

ill try and stay away from WD40 i can remember when it first became popular in the early 90s it was great stuff used for every thing even a fishing lure i did try that but i cant honestly say it caught any more fish but at the same time it didn't catch any less either lol
