transparent background for a firework picture

I want a line drawing on a transparent background so that when it is placed in a document the background shows through the line drawing. everyfile i create despite asking for a transparent background gets imported with a white background, help please.

First of all, to eliminate the obvious: when you save your line-drawing image, are you saving it in a format which supports transparency?

in answer to your question i have no bloody idea are there formats that do and dont?

Yes. JPEG does not support transparency. GIF supports 'binary' transparency (it's either transparent or opaque). PNG supports a full alpha channel (ie, degrees of translucency, from fully opaque to fully transparent).
