Iv got a little job on over the next couple of weeks that i will be comuting to, ideally want to use the road bike. Looking at the map I could go off road and take the more scenic route along the Trans Penine Trail. I rode this about 10 years ago on an mtb and can't remember if it's hard packed dirt, Tarmac or gravel I suspect a mixture. looking at traveling between Dunford bridge to Thurgoland. Anyone know what the surface is like? Is it passable on 25mm slicks? Or should I hedge my bets and use the cx bike ?(which will be slower on the road)

I have done Dunford Bridge to Penistone on 25mm slicks it was a bit dodgy in places, this was in the summer, I wouldn't do it again on the road bike, unless they have improved the surface, it was 2 or 3 years ago, should be fine on the CX.

They have improved a lot of the trail in various places so worth checking it out.

Thanks. Will probably take the cx on the first day so i can judge it better. Not afraid of a bit of a bone rattling/mud sliding, but would just rather avoid punctures if there is any really coarse gravel.

It's tarmac the whole way with a little bit of pea gravel on top further up to slow the 40mph strava chasers. You will be fine on any bike with any tyres.
I'm at Penistone and use the TPT regularly.

They spent a lot of money a couple of years ago ahead of the Grand Depart for the Tour de France.

Between Dunford Bridge and Millhouse Green it is nearly all tarmac and the rest into Penistone and onto Thurgoland is good hard surface. We take the kids on here quite regularly and it's a nice easy ride now.

Perfectly rideable on a road bike. Only obstacles were dogs!

The Thergoland tunnel was fun. There are a few lights out and several huge piles of horse poo!
