I have done a search for the following amongst the forums but I can see no reference to the Trangia preheater so hopefully this may be something new for Trangia users as it is for me.

Last week on one of the fishing forums that I frequent, I saw a reference to a Trangia preheater, something that I have never come across before and they have been out a while, also that they are quite expensive for what they are, cheapest I have found is about £6 to date. They are also known as Trangia Winter Kit or attachment and some come with another burner, or just the preheater.

Also there was a tip to make your own by just using an empty shoe polish tin bottom, a bit of cotton wool and 2 or 3 mils of meths. The overall aim is to warm the meths up quick in the burner by the preheater, and the burner to ignite fully aflame and the preheater to burn out very quick.

Having just had a few days fishing, armed with my polish tin, I gave it a try and what a success it is.

I forgot my cotton wool so just used a few bits of wood chip, dropped a few drips of meths on it, lit it, then put my trangia burner installed in the windshield over the top of it ready to cook, the burner itself lit itself from the flames from the preheater, within 30 secs or less the trangia was well lit and no longer having to wait about 5 mins for it to get warm, absolutley brilliant. It also gets a lot hotter and cooks quicker if need be, I had a pan of water bubbling around the edge of the surface of the water in seconds and well steaming, with flames lapping all round the pan, did not time it, but it has cut down boiling time dramatically.

But if you try it, then tread carefully till you master it and see how it works especcially the first time, on one occasion I put too much meths in the polish tin, the aim is for it to burn out quick, but I found too much gets the burner a bit too hot and I had flames hissing out of the burner like a gas cooker, I had to get it out my bivvy quick before I ended up with a skylight.

It would probably work with a tea light and then blow it out when the burner gets going properly.

there's actually a link how to do it on youtube:

(I know! your not supposed to use cookers in tents but what's life without a bit of excitement, we all have to die of something)

I hav eone but hav eno tyet used it. I could only buy it complete with an extra burner and an aluminium plate that is supposed to replect heat upwards, and prevent the stove from sinking into the snow. I guess for most people only the pre heater is the thing to have, but I know of no source to get it without the expensive extras. On the other hand, I recently damaged a burner beyond repair, so it did come in handy.

I find that the meths will light in cold weather simply by using a cluster of matches - usually three lit together and immediately put into the burner while still flaring works well!
