Hi,
I am fairly new to riding, I'm 28 and had barely ridden a bike for the last 5 years. I am training for a charity bike ride doing 150 miles in 3 days dropping off trailers of food to food banks around our area. We had 13 weeks to train and I missed the first 6 weeks with a lower back problem so am 6 weeks behind on training compared to everyone else. After that I got on the bike a few weeks back, did a couple of 7 mile rides and then realised my bike was a childs so my mate has given me his 'Trek' bike to use which looks and feels a bit fancy but has certainly made things easier. Our 150 mile route will be about 50/50 off road/on road, luckily I live near the New Forest so there is plenty of off road to train on, I did 2 x 7 mile rides during the week then a 15 mile ride on the saturday, then last week did 2 x 7 mile rides during the week and a 26 mile one at the weekend. No pain apart from a bit of back ache but nothing serious. Yesterday I went out and did 10 miles in the forest before work and got a really painful shooting pain in front of my right knee whenever I stood up to ride (mainly when going uphill) at the point when my foot was lowest (and my leg straight). The pain was fine after 30 minutes so I hadn't thought anything of it and assumed it was fixed. Tonight I set about planning a route to my work in Poole (about 20 miles) so I could ride to and from work tomorrow, I was really looking forward to it as I have caught the cycling bug. But after I planned my route I popped to help a mate move some boxes to his new house and found myself with my knee hurting when carrying and walking with heavy boxes, the same shooting pain going up through the front of my knee. I really still want to ride to work tomorrow and my mate who I helped move said he reckons riding through the pain will strengthen it, something I think sounds a bit odd. My head says do the ride my heart says rest it because it needs to heal. Any tips? I only really get the pain when straining or really trying to push hard (and on hills as I am still a bit of a light weight when it comes to cycling). My worry is cycling tomorrow and making my knee even worse, thus having to rest even more and putting me even further behind in training.
Please help.
