my last phone, a SE W995, had a simple SPS tracker built in.

my new phone, a htc desire doesn't, well i haven't found anything yet.

can anyone recommend either a ready made app or software to download for android. it doesn't have to be anything too special, as long as it tracks a route and gives me an overall distance

Look for Andando on the android market. Its free, can track you and put up a trace on googlemaps on the phone, it can also export the trace to the SD card on the phone, that you can then download to your PC to see your trace on google earth. Exporting as a KNL file seems to be the best, as it allows the use of Google earths time sliders.

I've the same phone. I've been using 'sporty pal pro'...the pro version is 30 days trail. I haven't paid for it even after the trail. But I prefer the layout on pro, than to the normal version.

I bought Satsportslog for my HTC Wildfire for £229 from Android Market.

You download additional free software to PC.

To use it, switch on at start of ride, switch off at end and save file to Phone mamory card. Dock with PC and start PC application. File gets imported and analysed: Google maps, Googke Earth, graphs etc. I find it very good at the price.
