Hi

When I inflate my rear tube with my track pump it keeps on shooting off the valve end. It reaches about 80psi then the plastic section at the end of the hose flies away from the valve. It has been ok on my hybrid tyres (inflate them to about 85psi) but these 25's that I am trying to get to about 100-110 seem troublesome

Any tips? I think the pump is capable of these pressures easily (never had probs with 28's up to 85 psi and also presta) but might it be the actual valve setion of the tube I am trying to inflate that's causing it to slip off when the pressure builds...?

Cheers

As in life you get what you pay for. I struggled like you with a cheapo plastic track pump. Then I bought a Joe Blow Sport pump last year from Halfords for £25. It has a little lever to hold the connector onto the valve and gets to 100psi in about half-dozen strokes. I've been impressed with it so far

i brought a cheapish wrench force track pump which was fine for a couple of years but started blowing off like yours. I brought a replacement tube and valve adapter made by Topeak and it is amazingly different, this one is serviceable as well it was about £14 IIRC.

Yep this is my point. At home I have a specialized which is excellent however when Lidl or Aldi had one of their offers on last year I bought a cheapo for work and it was rubbish. I could only get it to 80 psi which took considerable effort before it snapped at the base.

Money refunded, lesson learnt.

It's a metal halfords one - cost about 20 quid. It gets upto 85psi easy on the 28's but only reaches about 80 before detatching from the 25's!

There is no lever to lock it to the valve but it does twist to lock.... seemed ok until now.Perhaps it's time to invest in a better quality pump. Might get a brand name one for 30 quid or so after pay day... Cheers all.

Thx Ian. That must be the model above mjy one then. I have a sneaky feeling the current one is failing because it doesn't have a locking lever and just twists to lock :/

Same... The Joe Blow is worth every penny.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I have a 4.99 Lidl one - the all metal one. It has a locking lever on the valve connector, and I have no trouble getting to over 100 psi, as long as the connector is pushed firmly on to the valve before locking it on. (I admit the plastic one they were selling more recently didn't look up to much - therefore I didn't buy it!)

I've got a Wrench Force one and have the same problem on Presta valves as WindyRob reports. As I had already returned one after 8 months I wouldn't buy one again.

I must be lucky then - bought 2 of them in April 2008 - second one is still untouched - 'mint boxed', used the other at least once a week, often more, and it is still going strong - only the push on adaptor beginning to show some wear, but hey - not bad for a fiver, and it seems some much more expensive pumps have far worse problems .......

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and suggestions. Yesterday I got one of these. Remarkably easy to inflate up to 110 psi (just a few gentle pumps)

The nice chap in Evans did it me for 30 quid as I asked about the cheaper (sport 1 version). With my 10% LCC discount on top it was £27 very well spent!

Cheers
