I’ve seen it in this country, near Sheffield when it started in Yorkshire, also went to the Portsmouth stage in the 1990’s. But you can’t beat a mountain stage. We did a cycle tour of the Alps many years ago, and managed to see 3 stages. On a mountain stage, they don’t just flash past, you can see them coming, get a good view of the riders and the field is really spread out, so the race takes ages to pass through. We saw them on the Col de Glandon, a few days later on the Col de Colombiere, and a TT stage from Morzine to Avoriaz. On the Columbiere, we jumped in behind the broom wagon and rode up the rest of the climb, with crowds cheering us on. Probably wouldn’t be allowed today!
