My step-daughter asked me about this today, she thinks these guys are -quote- "bonkers" but that women have a right to be equally mad. I did a quick check and found that there was a "Tour de France Feminin" but it was plagued with difficulty (including copyright claim by the TdF!) and stopped in 2009.

My daughter, who used to be a not-bad track cyclist a few years ago, has just told me not to sign it as she reckons that no good will ever come of it...so I signed

Are any posters in the land of reality here? A proper women's stage race, yes that would be excellent. However a team in the TdF, er, how long do you have on time limits. No doubting women's stamina, or determination, but races need to be designed to be entertaining as well as competitive, because the TV people would not otherwise be interested. And that's where the money is generated, because sponsors want to be on TV.
This happens every few years, but what is actually needed is a structured programme for a pro women's peloton, which does not really exist now, and races have been lost over the past few years. It's always the same problem - money. So it will be interesting to see how the new 5 day promoted by the ToB organisers next May goes. I hope it is a big success, and leads on to greater things, possibly a women's ToB. But again, the money has to be there, because promoters do not run races for altruistic reasons, it's their living. Something which seeems to escape a lot of the dreamers, who obviously would be prepared to work full time for nothing in pursuit of their ideals. Or not?

Now I sit back and wait for the brickbats, being accused of sexism, othe slurs maybe, simply for offering a practical opinion.....
It's always, with the demanders and petitioners, a call for "someone" to run this race or that race (for either gender), without working out how "someone" is going to finance the enterpise. So long as the "someone" does not incude said petitioners!

As aaraptlio says above there was a womens' TdF, not so called because the men's event would let them use the name 'Womens Tour de France'! Instead it was the 'Grande Boucle'..

In 2008 I watched them climb the col du Tourmalet:

As can be seen the spectator support was pathetic compared to the TdF for men and that would have to change if the event could raise the same sponsorship and funding. I agree with Emma Pooley: same places, same day would be crucial.
