I used a top tube mounted bag made to take a phone when I started cycling. It carried tools, tube and a few cereal bars/gels + phone without problem. I stopped used it regularly when I got a larger phone (medium bag) and haven't got round to buying a larger one yet, but I found it quite handy. I don't have a garmin/gps so it's good if I'm likely to need directions.

I just want it for sportives and the like

Alpkit gear is top line stuff, really impressed with all the items I have purchased from them. With regard to the fuel pod, just need to make sure you have enough vertical tube to secure it below the steering stem. Ideal for small stuff, not as big as you may think.
