I've swapped out my stem for a slightly shorter one to see if I can reduce neck ache on longer rides.

Thing is, the top cap (is that what its called?) use to fit snugly around the circumference of the old stem but now sits a little proud of its edges, picture below will show what I mean. Underneath the top cap all is well, the steerer sits snugly with a tiny recess between it and the top edge of the stem.

Is this Okay? do I need a smaller top cap, does it even matter?

Cheers in advance.

So long as it's engaging with the star nut inside the steerer it's fine. Once you've got the headset tight and the stem bolts tightened you don't technically need the top cap

Doesn't matter. You only need a top cap for setting the bearings.
Once the stem bolts are done up there's no technical reason not to remove the top cap and leave it at home.
I'd be replacing the top cap with a white one myself though.
Aesthetically that's all wrong the way you have it! White stem and spacers + black cap = :stop:
