Hi

Could any one tell me what tools I need to cut and make off the ends of outer cables.

Also, what tool do I use for crimping the cable end part (the part that stops the cable fraying). I currently use my cutters but would like something that does a neater job.

Thanks

Paul

for cutting the cable i either use a good quality pair of side cutters or if im after the neatest job possible then the dremill tool with a mini cut off wheel in it makes a perfect job of cutting and also the heat from the disk makes a nice almost lipped finish to the inner sleeve of the outer cable. as for crimping the little feral thingys at the ends of the inner cable i just use a pair of pliers and using the curved middle bit of the pliers (the bit between the wier cutter and the section that touch together) and then gently and evenly crimp and it looks fine.
i have heard of people putting a bit of innertube over the ferrule and then crimping it so the ferrule wont get any scratches or marks i was once told to solder it on the end of the cable but to be honest i think thats a bit extreme

to cut inner cable put a bit of old outer over it .stops it squashing and fraying.

to cut outer put old inner inside as it acts as a support.

nothing wrong with soldering the ferrule but i use my cable crimping tool for electrical cables and it finishes then perfectly. I hate the 2 lines from a lazy crimp.

I do NOT have OCD honest !

I also use heat shrink on cable ends - it's very neat. Also always leave the cable long enough to allow you to cut the crimped end off if need be, and then refit.

i like that idea of using the old cables iv not heard that one before.

i know what you mean about the way you can end up with lines when crimped i had a friend that used to use wire cutters to crimp the ferrules it looked bad

I'm an electrician and have an array of cable cutters, Are these suitable for cutting cable outers? Always wondered.
mine are my normal sidecutters and are fine
croppers don't work great
