What weight would be considered to heavy for a road bike/ mountain bike

A friend of mine recently bought a road bike and within a few days the sprocket packed up he weight is 17/18st was it his weight that caused the problem

i would suggest the problem was definitely NOT caused by his weight.

I don't know - I thought there were quite a few on here of those sort of weight... do you know the brand of the bike or the model - some are probably more robust than others.

there is no reason 17/18 stone cant ride either.

When you say sprocket, which part do you mean? are you talking about the whole rear cassette or just one of the sprockets on it?
What bike was it?
A road bike with 32 spokes should be fine for someone of this weight.

I was 23 stone when I got a road bike in April.

I got a Cube Agree (ultegra SL thorughout) which was supposed to come with Eastons EA50's, the LBS swapped them to Fulcrum Evo 5's, 20 spokes front, 24 rear.

Not had a single problem with the bike. Now have a winter bike too running some similarly priced wheels with same spoke count but round/stainless spokes, again no problems at all after over 2000 miles on the two combined (1500 on the Cube). I now weigh 19 stone.

I seriously wonder if a real budget bike would have coped, but who knows really?

as per OP's.
Weight shouldn't have been a problem. Bikes, including road bikes are made of sturdy stuff.
As to the sprocket I take it you mean 'Cassette' and for that to fail, there must have been something wrong with it in the first place

I certainly hope that weight isn't too much for a road bike.

And I'm not sure how weight would affect "the sprocket". Bearings, hubs, tubes, maybe?

I can't think why his weight would cause the sprocket to break.

being 16 stone and <cough cough> a few pounds the weight should not be an issue. Both my bikes are road bikes.
