I'm half way through building my new singlespeed and I've found the internal diameter of my handlebars is 28mm but the outside diameter of my quill stem adapter is 25mm.

Bum. Anyone got any bright ideas?

sorry but I would not advise farking about making a shim from a drink's can for a safety critical component as the steering. Cockey Cola cans are 0.1 mm and probalby Guinness too, so you would need several layers to make up the 2.6 mm difference - I doubt you will be able to wind it really tight so it will not be as solid as the proper shim. Last thing you want is have the front wheel not go in the same direction as you turn the bars - think painful and expensive dental/facial reconstructive surgery.

£ 2.99 is next to nothing.

Yebbutt it's not actually a bodge if done properly to the right thickness. You could buy "proper" shim material, but it's only metal sheet of a given thickness.

That said, for £2.99, the other thing does look easier :-)

A couple of scary moments on the way home have convinced me to invest.

Glad to hear the moments were only scary and nothing more serious. £2.99 for a proper shim is money well spent. Would not even buy a pint of the black stuff in a good pub
