Hi

Pedals with toe clips or clipped ?

I have always cycled with flats and toe clips and about a year ago bought a new bike with clipped pedals and shoes. Within 10 mins was on the way to hospital after crashing off. So back on went the toe clips............... However I am now thinking about clips again but am very wary. I commute to and from work on busyish roads and have also started triathlons so am nervous to go clips but feel they will benefit.

THE QUESTION: Is there anything out there that will work like clips but will give me the confidence like toe clips currently do ?

Any advice or comments will be much appreciated !

I changed a couple of years ago, and have not looked back. I think modern click systems are far safer than the old toeclips. It is just that much easier to get out. On the other hand, I do not normally use them on my commute, unless I bring my fancy tourer with spd (not often).

With my SPD's you can loosen them off a bit to make it easier to unclip - other than that its practice plus anticipation

Fell over with integrated click pedals a couple of times but only when I'd stopped, propped myself on something and forgotten still clipped in! Took a while but like them now. Can't remember the name of the pedals [normal 'pedal' one side for stop/start, click on the other] so will check when I get home.

+1

Why is it that new SPD pedals come tightened up to their maximum? Downright dangerous to newbies or people that do not realise this. I had my first ride on SPD's end up with a tug tug tug (almost) arggh! situation before I decided to look up the online manual for the pedals and read the very small writing... If it hadn't been for people on this forum I would have thought they were all like that!

Mine (M520 from SJS - IIRC) came all slacked off. Used once like that, once tightened half-way, been on max ever since.
But I do have very long levers.....
