My attitude was a bit better.

After reading and participating in some of the recent threads in here, I went out with a better attitude.
In the basis that I went out expecting the worst in everyone driving a 4 wheeled device, I wasn't disappointed.

The best thing is though, I just lived with it rather than getting angry about it.
Blessed are those who expect to be cut up, for they shall not be dissapointed.

I also remembered to head out into the wind to get the tail wind on the way home.
Now, the tail wind is on the uphill bit home, so The Lord giveth, The Lord taketh away

Other than that, My God I'm still in poor condition.
Still only managed 7 miles, but I guess any mileage is good mileage.
Reasonable pace for miles 1-5 (15.8mph on undulating terrain, which I'm quite pleased with.)
Miles 6 and 7, 9.6mph, bottom gear, back up the hill.
I guess at least I learned to take the difficult bit at a pace I knew I could do without dying half way.
Even managed to mix up a little standing up lower cadence stuff with my usual low gear high cadence stuff.

As I type, I am no longer dying, so I guess I survived.

Hope everyone else enjoyed a wee bank holiday run out, even if it was as short as mine.
I might go for a canal run later on, how come 13 miles on the flat take half the effort of 7 miles on the hills...
At least that would get the day up to 20 miles.

Yes, I always find that the Lord taketh away on the way in, changeth the direction of the wind by 180 degrees and then taketh away on the way home as well! ;)

It might be the lord, more likely Murphy and his law, which states that there will be a head/cross wind at least 90% of the time, and the other 10% will be climbing. Good for the soul, suffering...!

Much as I would like to say here that the wind did indeed changeth verily and do unto my speed great disservice, I tell you most solemnly, the wind did stay its course and bore me home on its wings.

Well, it did its best at least.

For the hills were mighty, and the pull of the earth in all of its gravity was my undoing.

And verily I say unto thee, even although I was clad in the most clinging of fabrics, a roadie who did come the other way was not a good samaritan. For he did pass by on the other side and did not avert his gaze from his most onerous task.
Crabbit barsteward...

Maybe my cheeks of red and huffing and puffing did remind him of the devil himself.

Whatever...

16mph average on undulating terrain is seriously fast for somebody who only just started cycling recently  ... (unless you had LOTS of help from the wind)

If you keep the average speed a wee bit lower, for the moment, say 13-14 mph, you'll surprise yourself with how far you can go! Unless you are planning on becoming a time trial specialist, building up distance before speed is generally the recommended approach for any type of forward motion, cycling/running/swimming etc
And most of all, don't forget to have fun while out on the bike, especially when the sun is shining :bicycle:

I have no aspirations to do anything other than just get out and enjoy the bike.
Don't imagine I'll ever be particularly quick and nor do I want to either.
Besides which, the avge. for the whole thing was actually 13.3, it was only the first 5 which was 15.8
The slow bit home was 9.6 which reveals far more about my modest capabilities.
At one point, I was firmly in the the lowest gear I could find and doing 7.5mph.
I knew that's how I would be at the outset though.

Thanks for all the contributions though, they are much appreciated.

I did a 22 mile loop today, wind was a bit strange, didn't seem much of it but the speedo told a different story. 12mph going down the incline on one long straight bit and 17mph coming back up it.

Refreshingly I saw quite a few cyclists and every single one said hello, and the drivers seemed to be extra courteous today as well...maybe it's only having to work that gets people wound up.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Has been absolutely peeing it down all day here, 4 days off for the bank holiday and i have had no chance of a ride because it has either been raining very heavily or i have been to busy to get out with mini CK`s 4th birthday party .

I cant wait to get back to work so i can cycle again !

I was going to suggest the Wind Fairy, but I fear that would be misinterpreted as a flatulent middle aged bloke with wings!
