Hi all,
I'm a noob to all this cycling chat so i have two questions,

1. What the hell does SPD stand for???

2. I want to change from my racing pedals to mtb pedals because im tired of having to transport trainers if i go somewhere i need to walk. My question is, how limited by the shoes i buy am i to the pedals which match? For example im looking to get cheap pedals(Shimano SPD Pedal E-PDM520L) do i have to stick to Shimano MBT shoes???

Sorry if this topic has come up a million times before. :laugh:

Any cycling shoe that has the two hole system underneath will take the cleats you need with the Simano A520 pedals. I tried some well go cleats on Simano pedals with no issues. Check you existing shoes - some have the same holes and can be used

SPD = Shimano Pedaling Dynamics

Now you know :smile:

Shimano Pedalling Dynamics (SPD)

Shoes are generally either 3 bolt (road) and 2 bolt (mtb) but there's a few that do both. The a big range of either type; FWIW I was using a stiffered soled pair of mtb shoes with A520's (single side touring pedals, also spd) and considered they looked good on the roadie, shop around and you'll find a pair you like. After 10's of thousands of miles my shoes started to look worn :rolleyes: and I had a whole pair of SP-sl shoes in good condition and that was the only real reason I changed.

I took the same option, and use M520 SPD on both hybrid and road bike, with Shimano shoes. As already mentioned, and 2 bolt compatible shoes will be fine with the cleats.

Do what I did..I went for the A530 shimano dual pedal..1 side is flat for trainers and the other used SPD 2 bolt cleats.. ideal if you want to use trainers or recessed mtb cleat shoes.
