To lockring or not to lockring

Hi peeps,

I've completed upgrading my BB from a cup and cone to sealed bearing unit. I've tried to put the original lockring back on to the sealed unit but to no avail (it doesn't seem to like the threading). My question is, do sealed units require a lockring? Probably an idiot question I know, but for now I've just tightened the sealed unit up and it's running sweet.

No lock-ring required - if it's torqued-up right it shouldn't work loose.

cartridge bbs don't require a lock ring.

caveat: i've seen cup and cone bbs that look like cartridge ones (and use the same tool) but do need the lockring. that was on a halfords apollo.

oh, and don't throw the lockring away; it can be used with a fixed gear bike on the hub to keep the sprocket in place. keep it in a bits box or similar.

Ah, excellent. Thanks for the tips, and I have kept it as advised as you never know when you may need one
