I just ordered a nice new carbon bike and although its not turned up yet i notice it comes with slick tires.

on my current bike I have continental 4 seasons, which I understand are good all year round tires. Given that winters here/coming I'm thinking that slick tires might be a stupendous mistake to ride. Does anyone agree, or am I worrying about nothing?

You are worrying about nothing.
Slick tyres means more rubber on the tarmac which means more grip.

However as with all tyres (unless studded) avoid ice, snow and frost.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Take them off and put them away until next spring, then fit some Conti Gatorskins (folding) for the winter. (Or some more 4 Seasons if thats your preference).

Nothing wrong with ultremos must have done about 900 miles on mine and have had one puncture, but i am a light weight and do run them at a high pressure, when they wear out i will replace with the same.

I moved from the ultremos to the gp4000s also and found no difference performance wise , had 6 ultremo tyres and the 2 contis have lasted at the moment twice as long as a ultremo and still a bit of life left in them .
