Hey all,
Just a quick question.
Trying to service my bottom bracket but the first part of it has a large Alan Key shape (i only have a wrench set) which isnt much good,

Any tips to remove it or do i need to buy a specific tool for the job?

Kind regards

Samuel

Any chance of you taking a picture or telling us the model? There are a few different types so we need to know which one to give you a useful answer

If it's the same bike as you posted about HERE then I'd suspect the same as User30090.

However, the allen head bolt would only be for the crank arm, as B2 says, you'd then need a CRANK EXTRACTOR to split the arms from the spindles, and then a relevant tool, (possibly on of THESE), to remove the BB itself.

I put oil in the crack arm area and all the squeeking stops for a week or so and wanted to give it a good clean etc, i have a seperator for the crankarm already but just need to remove this darn oversized alan key. I only have that photo, maybe a full alan key set would help??

If its squeaking then its likely the bearings are dry and there is not alot you can do about that as they are sealed. I'd get a new BB and look for a cheap chainset as those truativ ones have a reputation for falling off!!

ps. A full allen key set would be a good investment too! Lidel/Aldi had some good ones recently.

It's an 8mm allen key for that, but then you will need a crank extractor (as said above). My Truvativ FiveD crankset used a normal square taper extractor.

FWIW get a set of t bar allen wrenches rather than alllen keys. Far more leverage and all round better to work with
