Tips for changing inner tubes/tires

I am a complete mechanical gorilla, and having spent the better part of an hour fighting with my wheel to remove and replace the tire I managed it - only to find I had punctured the tube in the process! I just wondered if anyone had any advice, the tire was brand new out of the box so maybe I should have opened it and left it for a while?

Best to get your Dad to show you before you are 10. That worked for me, but now you can get all the help you need from utube.

A pair of thick gloves and a bit of talcum powder on the last few tight inches of the rim works wonders. Also when you get to the point where it is getting hard to force the bead over the rim use a couple of toe straps or cable ties to hold it in place before you move on.

Use tyre levers to remove the tyre but not to fit it!, unless they are some of the special levers on the market to help refit tyres such as Var lever, speed lever and another than I've seen. First time out of the box is always the worst, I spent over an hour and a half putting on a new tyre recently and when I had put the old tyre on for the last time it practically slipped on.

Make sure you push the rim down into the channel of the wheel, and watch some of the you tube vids!

Do the job somewhere warm and give the tyre and tube a good dusting with talc. That's all.

Take them on and off 10 times in the comfort of a warm room. On the 11th time get a huge fan blowing a hurricane into your face and get a helper to throw ice cold water over you every few seconds.

OK, miss number 11 but there is no reason not to practise and practise again.

When you are taking the tyre off, get all three levers under the bead before twisting the other ends down onto the spokes. If you put them in one after the other, it's hard to get the last lever under the bead.
