Tiny brass washers on FSA chainset - why?

In between the spider and the outer ring. Are they there to prevent the ring from sticking to the spider or for spacing?

No idea but as brass is relatively expensive / heavy there must be a good reason to use it over say steel or aluminium.

It's normally only used for low friction applications.

I wondered what they were for. I had some on the FSA Vero that came on my fixed and can't think what use they serve. They are certainly too thin to be of any use as spacers.
