There I was riding along minding my own business when a ting ting ting dragged me off Mt Ventoux and back to Essex. It seemed to be wheel rotation speed. My initial thought was the wheel magnet was tapping the computer pickup, but no, it was clear. It wasn't a broken spoke. As I was slowly rotating the wheel I saw the problem and had to chuckle to myself. There was a blob of chewing gum stuck to the tyre, and a tiny piece of grit had caught in it. Rotational forces had caused the grit to try and fly off the gum but couldn't so it looked like a tail with the grit at the end. It was the bit of grit at the end of this tail that was hitting the fork as the wheel went round.

The tiniest things can make the most noise, too....

I was cycling home in a fierce crosswind once, and as the road turned slightly so that I was absolutely across the wind, I was aware of whistling noise, and marvelled at how the wind in the spokes could make such a sound.

However turning a corner the noise persisted, so I stopped and checked, and it was a pannier strap that I'd failed to tuck up properly, and which was rubbing lightly against the tyre.

Good job it was as it's far better than the spoke issue or any other for that fact!

Changed a wheel bearing once - old style cones and free balls.

Wheel rumbling continued. Then noticed derailleur cable loose end rubbing against the tyre.
