Hello all,

I'm back from my christmas visits and now i have to get my back in working order again before I have to go back to work on monday.

i have no idea what I'm doing so may need copious amounts of help....and I'm afraid I've already fallen at the first hurdle. I took my old (snapped) mech hanger to the bike shop and they gave me what they said was a replacement...but it doesn't seem to fit exactly.....is this going to work? It doesn't look promising to me but i REALLY don't want to have to post it back and order a new one. I took a photo:

It fits now...I'm so embarrassed....in my defence I'm working from a book where the pictures are the size of postage stamps

Don't worry about it, just be happy in the knowledge that you gave me a good laugh, and that you re-assured me that I do (sort of) know my way around a bike ;)
Glad it's working, good luck with it

Haha, good stuff

It's irrelevant now anyway as I don't seem to have the bits to fasten it on.......there should be two, right?

Well, I found the other screwy bit.....the mech and the chain are attached to the bike now which is progress... but I can't get the cable thing through where it shold go because the metal bit on the end makes it too fat and it won't come off.

What should one do in this situation

I will if I get very stuck...i'm trying to avoid using phone at all though cos I only have a PAYG mobile so it costs a fortune.

I got the end off eventually....i can't get the cable taut though ;)

Well...everything is attached to everything else...and the gears work to some extent but can't get the three biggest sprockets...?

Assuming you're trying to get to the three biggest sprockets (lowest rear gears) whilst in the smallest chainring, right? Otherwise don't do it  If you are already doing that, then there should be a little derailleur tension adjuster just as the cable goes into the rear mech, which you can turn to adjust shifting. Have a look along the bike while you're doing it to see the mech moving, to work out how far to go. This may not be the solution, but I think it might be...
