My seatpost collapsed on me on the way home this evening, it is of the quick release variety. I've not had a chance to have a proper look as to why, but I'll do so in the daylight tomorrow.

Is it possible to tighten the quick release so this doesn't happen and if so, is it just the same as tightening the quick release on the wheels?

(Apologies for the dumb noob question)

Thanks for the quick reply Lee, I'll take a look at that. Is there one in particular that is recommended?

Just re-check the QR and make sure it's tight enough and keep using it. You may have have just caught the lever and loosened it.

Never had an issue with QR clamps, and they are much more versatile than a fixed clamps.

Had a look this morning and gave it a tighten, seems better now but I won't know until I go for a ride. I did notice that I could easily twist the seat when I got the bike but now that I've tightened the QR the seat is now held firm.

They are very handy if you need to remove/drop the seat to get the bike into the car or want to drop the seat when off road. They clamp just as tightly as a bolt-up one.

Indeedy. Bolt-up ones are lighter and a bit more theft-proof though. All depends what you're doing with the bike (commuting, off-roading etc.).

actually more so. I had problem of seat sliding down and replacedthe original quick release with 2 clamps, which are lighter and use smaller bolt. no matter how much I tightened them, and it is hard to say how close I was to the point where something snaps, the seat would still slide down.

reverted back to QR (this use 5 mm insted of 4 mm) and it feels like you can tihghten it more than the clamps. anyways, it is done up quite tight and seat is in place.

I don't like the extra wieght of the QR lever so am looking for a cylinder of aluminium that I can use instead of the QR lever.

I had that problem and it turned out to be the seat post. The original post on my bike was extruded and it was too smooth. Genesis gave me a better quality one which was turned down, they look almost identical but it stays put with far less pressure on the clamp. With the original post I actually broke the clamp trying to hold the post.
