I own a Giant scr with Tiagra shifters, where the gear cables come out of the shifters there is a barrel like device, stupid question is this a cable adjuster? do you need to use it and how tight should the cable be?
i thought all cable adjustments were done at the business end.

I don't think so, isn't on mine anyway, can't turn it. There's a barrel adjuster by the rear mech, but nothing at the shifters...

I have those on my 2007 SCR2 with tiagra shifters because I don't have any adjusters anywhere else apart fomr at the rear mech, and yes they are cable adjusters.

an in line cable adjuster perhaps?

something like this?

if so yes, you'll also have an adjuster on the rear mech and often on the frame. they're designed for easy gear tweaks whilst riding as the description says. Found sometimes on frames where there's no adjustment on the cable stops on the down tube

that is exactly the sort of thing, being an older person not used to modern equipment, many thanks.

If you do us these in-line adjusters, then it is advisable to move to the smallest ring on the front before making the adjustment. If this is done under too much tension the strands comprising the outer cable can fray within the adjuster.
