My right-hand Tiagra lever seems to be dying on me (intermittently stops engaging and won't shift either direction).

I've been looking for a replacement but they only seem to have 10-speed Tiagras now - am I doomed? Do I have to replace my entire drive-train with 10-speed kit?

New Sora is 9 speed iirc and has the proper paddles like Tiagra and above.

Are you sure it's the shifter goo and not a sticky/frayed cable?

Yes - cable was starting to fray, but replaced it and I still had the same issue. Changer wasn't clicking audibly and the gears weren't changing (holding the cable, you could feel there was no change in tension). I faffed about with it last night and it appears to have started working again. Made it all the way in this morning without any dodgy changes or loss of the ability to change gear. Fingers crossed it stays that way for the foreseeable future!!

I replaced my 2011 Tiagra shifters with the new 2013 Soras as bikeshop stated it would take months to get 9sp Tiagra replacements. There is no difference in shift quality.

Thanks for the info - I'd better start putting some money aside now for when the shifter goes again!

I've got some Microshift 9 speed STI's and Shimano Sora gears. Ok I've only done 2500 miles with them, but thus far bombproof.

Normal "paddle type" for downshifts. Upshifts via a much smaller "lever", not a thumbshift but situated on the outside facing aspect of the lever just below the brake lever pivot point. Activated with your index finger. I find it works really well. The only time it is difficult to for an upshift is when you are on the drops as it is a fair reach for your finger. Would be an issue for small hands but luckily mine are like shovels.

Just to make sure I have this correct when I say upshift I mean going to a smaller (physically) cog ie harder to pedal.

New 2013 Sora shifters bought last week and fitted on Sunday. Look identical to my old Tiagras except for the fact that they're completely black. Gone is the old Sora button shift, and they're now totally 'flappy-paddle' like the Tiagras.

Really crisp, tight and clicky shifting on my first ride this morning to work - made me realise how worn my Tiagra levers were as they were much less precise and the shifting was much looser.

Very pleased with them so far, as I am with my new black'n'white bar-tape :-)
