I’m building a new bike using parts in the shed. I have a nice 4700 triple chainset and Fd but want flat bars. Will this work with MTB shifters (if so which ones). Anybody know?
The Chainset per se isn't a problem, you just need derailleurs that are compatible with your shifters (and compatible brakes to shifters too).. if its a road bike Tiagra FD it wont work with the MTB shifters you need for flat bars, Different pull ratios (4700 has same pull ratio as 11 spd shimano)
i'd have a very good check of the parts in the shed before embarking on it, could save yourself a lot of time building something that doesn't work very well
I know 4600 shifters work with a MTB 10-speed RD and cassette (my gravel bike has this). The fact that 4700 uses a different pull ratio to 4600 suggest to me that perhaps this wouldn't work.
Shimano do shifters for the 4700 groupset that work with a flat bar - for Tiagra this is the SL-4701 part, you'll also need separate brake levers (BL-4700).
