Does anybody know if Shimano thumb shifter inner gear cables have horizontal or veritcal 'barrels' at the end?

I'd rather not losen mine to to find out as it's frayed and I may not get it connected again, I'd like to keep riding the bike in the meantime.

Also, if the cable is the horizontal barrel type then is it bascally the same as a brake cable? I've got a spare one that I could use.

Gear cable is thinner than brake cable, so the two are not interchangeable.
If you buy just the inner, they usually have both types of barrel, one at each end.
Pretty sure it's horizontal for thumbies...

Not quite sure what you mean by horizontal or vertical. My Shimano thumbies have the nipple in line with the cable, like this:

Regular Shimano gear cable inners (same as you would use on everything from old DT shifters to modern STIs) will work just fine

That's my experience too - did up a neighbour's old Tourer last year, and the DT shifters happily took new shimano inners.
