There have been a few threads recently that would possibly have worked better as status updates or personal conversations, so I just wanted to remind everyone what the general purpose of each type of conversation is.
Before I do that though, if you have friends on CycleChat and you want to see what they're up to and get an alert when they post a status update, you just need to follow them. It's really simple, just click on their avatar and click the follow link. Piece of cake eh?!!
Now, let's (broadly) define what they are:
Next, you've narrowed the bike down to a particular model. You have a query about the stem and know that two other people have the exact same bike. This would be a candidate for a personal conversation with these two CCers who have direct experience with the bike and will, hopefully, be able to answer your question/s.
Okay, so you've picked it up from the LBS, posted thread with pics for everyone on CC to drool over, had a few weeks of riding the life out of it and you're just having a private excited moment that you want to share with everyone on CC about how amazing your new bike is - that would be a great status update.
So ... how do you start a multi-person conversation or post a status update?
Status updates are really simple - just go to your profile page and post in the box at the top, or hover over your username at the top right and start writing in the box at the bottom - when you're finished, just click Post:
For multi-member personal conversations, just click Inbox at the top right and select Start a New Conversation. Click in the Participants box and start typing the username of the first member you want to include. Select them from the list, and if you want to add more people, start typing again and select their username when it appears. Continue until everyone is included, then move on to the message title and then type out your message.
Everyone in the list will get a copy and have the opportunity to respond; everyone in the recipients list will see all messages everyone else posts in reply, so it behaves like a thread but is only between the people in the list on the right.
It's not an exact science and I don't want to stop any of you posting in the forums if you feel it is appropriate, but it would be great if status update style threads could be moved to your personal profile pages and an occasional personal conversation could be used in preference to an "exclusive" thread (where only a limited few people seem to be wanted / welcome).
If you need a hand working out how to use the Status Update feature or start personal conversations, please feel free to post in the Support forum or send me a PM and we'll do our best to help.
Thanks,
Shaun

Now, let's (broadly) define what they are:
- Thread - This is an all-inclusive discussion that invites everyone on CycleChat to get involved and comment. Threads appear in the forums, search results and New Posts list.
- Personal conversation - This is an off-forum chat between one or more people and is exclusive to those invited into the conversation. These appear in your Inbox.
- Status update - This is a simple personal statement that doesn't need a full on forum discussion. A sort of CC tweet! This appears on your profile page and the CC home page sidebar.
