Threadless bottom bracket

Got home from work tonight by the skin of my teeth. Thought at first there was a problem with both pedals as they were wobbling from side to side but on closer inspection I discovered the bottom bracket was basically coming undone. It's a Shimano cartridge one and the right hand sleeve was almost out of the shell.

After removing the cranks I've now found that the thread inside the bottom bracket has all but disappeared. It's a Dawes 501 frame and I've become quite attached to the damn thing so I thought about getting a threadless bottom bracket to replace the threaded one. I really don't want to get rid of the frame if I can help it.

Has anyone got any experience of these quirky threadless things? Do they do the job OK? They look nice in the pictures but do they cut the mustard?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I used a Pristine from Parkers of Bolton. It doesn't require chamfers on the BB shell.

No problems so far, but that bike has only done about 1,000 miles since I've fitted it.

Why not get your LBS to re-tap the threads for you and with judicious use of some PTFE tape you may well be able to fit a new unit?
