My fingers and wrists started getting increasingly painful about four years ago. I thought it had something to do with the riding position on my first road bike. I ignored it for about six months but it was quickly diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis once I had been referred to a consultant. Two drugs, methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine, had it completely under control very quickly and I don't suffer at all any more. That's all I can offer as a personal experience. It certainly isn't a diagnosis.
I wish you the best of luck.

No mention of an Arthritic condition @User9609 ?
I know that sounds like the easy answer though.
I too suffer really painful hands in the cold, but it is always the fingers which I have broke in 30 years of trying to catch a cricket ball.
I wasn't very good at catching the ball

I suffered for years with a very similar set of circumstances and the pain getting gradually worse every year. My doctor at the time blamed a very heavy job I had early in my career which admittedly did give me occasional hand injuries and basically said I should put up with it.

2 winters ago I went to the doctor for some pain relief and was met with a different response. My old doctor had retired and my new doctor was astounded when I explained my symptoms and the previous response, as was the consultant he referred me to.

Turns out I have psoriatic arthritis. They tried me on Methotrexate which didn't really work for me and I am now on a drug trial instead. The trial drug has completely eradicated my symptoms so fingers crossed it is licenced prior to the end of my trial.

Personal experience obviously but I suppose the message is don't give up at first diagnosis if your in pain, there appears to be little that cannot be helped by the correct medical professional.

I would still like to see my old doctor that ignored me for all those years so that I can show him what a good job his replacement has done by squeezing him gently by the throat with my now fully functional hands:boxing:

I too have Psoriatic Arthritis pauldavid, tried many drugs, including Methotrexate, none of which helped much until I was put on Humira, injecting myself twice a month. It was brilliant, got me back on the bike and inspired me to ride the Dartmoor Classic three years ago. Unfortunately, Spinal Stenosis has kept me off the bike more recently

I also suffer from painful hands. When it's cold and damp it feels, not always, like I've been working outdoors in the cold, like you @User9609. I've worked outdoors in all weathers. Memories of tree-planting and knocking stakes into the ground with my fists because they'd become numb with the wet and cold and couldn't hold a hammer -:headshake:.
I've suspected arthritis but haven't been to the doctor. I usually wait until the pain is unbearable before doing that. You should get yours checked out though. Have you been tested for it?
