The doomed

If mentioned to a few folk this week that I'm planning on putting bar ends on my hybrid. Ive been met with a wide variety of opinions.

My main (only?!) use for them is an alternative hand position for out and about on canals/paths etc.

I see 2 things to consider:
Short vs Long
Ergo vs straight

Anyone any thoughts? I can get them for £10 or so, obviosuly, but due to the nature of my riding am I likely to benefit from one style over another more? Would ergo-bars be worth the cash?

I have these, and can say they are well worth the money.

I use them on two of my bikes - the type that have a bend in them. After many years I recently discovered that I prefer them in a horizontal position, rather than angled upwards, as it reduces pressure and numbness on the hands. The hand position is then similar to riding on the hoods of drops.

This is a better shot:
