I have been looking around for an accessory bar for lights, gps, etc and have found theThorn Accessory Bar which would be perfect. http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-accessory-bar-mk1-t-shaped-105-mm-extension-222-mm-0-deg-prod11040/
The only problem is the ammount of spare space I have under my stem is pretty much the same as is needed for the accessory bar.
Would it be ok to fir the bar without any spacers between that and the headset or would it be better to find a 1mm spacer to fit above the headset?

The bar effectively replaces the spacers.

When I picked up my Thorn, I had added this as an afterthought. They simply took out the spacers, inserted the accessory bar and refitted the bars

Thanks for the reply. I will get one ordered now I know I wont need to use spacers as well. It looks like a really usefull addition to any touring bike and will help solve the handlebar bag and lights problem.

Before you order the Thorn - have a look on eBay. Extension Bar. Sporting Goods. Cycling. You will find a light weight plastic version for less than £4. I have one on my recumbent and it does the job just fine.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have had a good look at the ebay offerings.
I am more inclined towards the Thorn bar because ot its metal construction which would add extra strength for my handlebar bag and its length would also push the bag a way forward from the handlebars so I could at some point fit cross levers if i decide I would like them at some point in the future. The weight isnt an issue at all as it will be going on a heavy steel touring bike.
