With short hair, I'm after a titfa that will actually stop the piercing arctic wind coming through. Afore I go and buy one that will join the rest in a drawer, I thought I would see what if anything you suggest. Please, I'm serious.

Thanks

Mozzy

I have a number zero haircut (half a number one) and find thinsulate hats OK. I also have a genuine fur Russian hat, but most of the time that is too hot so only tends to get worn in the snow or when overnight beach fishing. You need to get to a decent camping or outdoor shop and see what is on offer, there are lot's of alternatives superior to thinsulate.

I'm with Mozzy. Thinsulate does it for me.

Ahhh, thinsulate does NOT do it for me; hence the question.

Just call me Chris...
Probably not the best to reply as I quickly overheat in most hats, especially thinsulate but...
I do have an Aldi (or maybe Lidl) skullcap in a very thin neoprene-type material. That is so insanely warm that I can't wear it unless the temperature drops several degrees below zero. Maybe worth a look?
I also have an Altural one (free with a mag subscription) and it's not quite as intense, but still too hot for me most of the time.

I've been using a Windstopper hat from Mountain Hardwear for several years. Much better than a regular fleece hat as it does what it's supposed to - stops the wind.

Mine is so old now they no longer make it, but when I replace it I'll probably get one of these

Won't fit under a helmet though - for that I've got a Craft Zero Windstopper hat. Nowhere near as warm as the Mountain Hardwear one though.

Thinsulate is a thermal layer, not a windproof layer. It won't do anything for wind-chill reduction on its own as it's not meant to.

Are you wearing it with a h**met or not?

I don't wear a helmet and I wear a proper merino beanie when it's really cold. Excellent thing. It wouldn't fit under a h**met. though.

No, hands up, I'm guilty

I've got this, which is lovely and toasty. Well shaped too, so goes right over the ears and the back of the neck.

Ahh now that looks interesting. Oh well lets see If I can find one round here.

The key is getting something windproof - merino wool isn't, nor are buffs. I have a merino hat and numerous buffs, but on really cold days I wear the windstopper hat on my head and the buff around my neck.
