Personally I prefer double-sided SPDs (PD-M520)
Much more convenient on the road.... and if I had a bike with flat one side/SPD on the other I'd be too lazy to go find my cycling shoes before going out.

I've used Time Atacs for years on MTB's, great pedals.

They have plenty of float, release well, don't clog with mud, and still work after years of abuse.

Would Shimano SPD M324 MTB Pedals be a good start for my cross bike and MTB ?
What are the merits of the different types ?
I use a very similar pedal (the A530) on my CX bike and love them.

That bike gets used on and off road and for commuting and I like being able to unclip before a possible situation (approaching a busy junction, for instance, or a very gloopy mud pie) can develop, leaving me free to stop and dab if needed but still being able to put down almost full power without clipping in again.

My road bike has M520s fitted, so I can appreciate the difference.

Just fitted my new clipless (one sided) pedals today. First ones for me. Tried unclipping sitting on the bike, stationery and it was impossible at first. Eventually managed it, so went and rode around the estate practising unclipping and clipping back in.

Clipping in is dead easy. Unclipping I have to think about it and it's still not easy/natural. Got to commute on them tomorrow - hope I don't have to brake to a standstill suddenly!

I use M520's on my MTB and road bike unclipping soon becomes second nature, if I ride a bike without SPD's I still find myself twisting my foot before I stop.

I was worried about going clipless especially as I have a wonky knee that effects my foot placement on the pedal. Finally took the plunge and got a set of Speedplay frogs, loads of free float, easy to get in and out of, light and self clearing of muck etc.

I just got some PD-A600 for my recumbent and the bloomin' awesome.....a look pretty nice as well and half the price of the equivalent spd-sl pedals.......(here in Oz anyway)....
