went to my mates earlier and was driving down a dual carraigeway and this bad eggy smell came in my car. thought, "bollox, bet that's my catalytic converter" then thought "have i even got a catalytic converter?... but must be my car coz no other cars on road"

anyway, spent 4 hours at mates, came back and exactly same spot but on other side of dual carriageway bad smell again.

This time thought "shoot, thats GAS!!!! and if it is it must be a HUGE leak for me to smell it from my car!" (obviously having the heaters on pulled the smell into my car.

So, as i work for National Grid, obviously i don't want to make a complete prat of myself, so phoned said mate who also works with me and we decided between us it must be because cold weather bursts the pipes. So on the phone i gets to the gas emergency line and the guy on the phone reckons it is too.

so i told the guy if it's news worthy to make sure they mention my name, but if it's not a leak, then to forget he ever spoke to me coz i'll never live it down at work ;)

The smell of mains gas is unmistakeable.

You were probably smelling a rubbish dump beside the road. The wind is from an unusual direction at the moment and rubbish dumps do have an unpleasant gassy odour.

Not a ploy to get the call out boys some overtime this week?

LOL, you sussed us!

well, apparently... no gas, no smell, not even any farting cows. there is no rubbish dump there and i know i definitely smelt gas. it wasn't a faint smell, it was really strong, i knew straight away the second time i smelt it what it was!!! unmistakable smell. we have them scratch and sniff things at work so i know what it smells like... and its bad.

o well, i'll never live this down now LOL ... unless there's a big explosion (Hmmmm.....)
