I quite fancied having a GTECH electric bike and so I sent them an e mail asking them for shipping prices to Denmark. I have had 2 electric bikes and an ICE trike sent from Cornwall and so expected the GTECH bike to be around the £100 mark.

I got the quote yesterday £505.

They have got to be joking. A good lesson of how non EU countries should not do business with EU countries :O)

I would send them an email asking them for a breakdown of their delivery charges as they do seem somewhat "excessive".

Maybe there's additional admin costs due to sending Lithium batteries and a motor to another country. I know every time I send via Parcel Force (nationally and internationally) I've to sign to say I've received a booklet about what not to send. Batteries are on that list and motors as well.

Edit: this link explains the rules which are complex.....

And don't miss the bit where the package won't be eligible for insurance.
So, no I don't blame them for ensuring they're not out of pocket if it's damaged or 'not received'.

You would probably be cheaper flying over here to collect it and bring it back on the flight with the price they have given you. How on earth can they justify that

To be fair to them, if they basically don't do overseas sales, they have quoted a "go away" price rather than wanting to rip you off. Let's say they don't know how to do it, what forms to fill in, extra risk of damage, claims, customs hassle etc. By the time they've worked out how to do it it, found a reasonably priced shipper etc, may have taken someone a day farting about, plus the extra cost involved, round it up and it's 500 quid. Now if you ship overseas all the time, it's only ten minutes work, and the cost is £75 or whatever.
