My partner got me a base layer last year which I think was from Aldi. I have the polyester type base layers from Decathlon etc but find them a bit sweaty and was wanting to find something like the one I was gifted. It is a Crane bamboo base layer. Its quite a heavy material but is very absorbent and comfy/soft to wear.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I always wear Canterbury cold gear, nice and light, not a bit sweaty, washes up well and dries fast .
Downside is they are pricey at around £30.
I did buy 2 last winter online for around £14 each though, just got to shop around.

Wool sounds like it will be itchy.
Merino wool comes in different grades. Superfine grade is not itchey, but pure superfine is hard to find. Chinese manufacturers usually dilute it with coarser grades or synthetics.
Chocholatefish have ceased their excellent superfine T-shirts because of poor supply from NZ, and seem to have closed shop.

I have used bamboo (from Bam). It is really comfy and has a nice feel, but takes ages to dry when wet. I would not recommend it for sweaty, outdoor winter use, but many people do.

Marino wool base layers are not itchy in my experience. But I find if it is pure marino, it becomes pretty saggy. I like to have marino mixed with a synthetic.

Aldi base layers are probably about the best VFM base layers out there. I have 7 or 8 of them and wouldn't bother spending more on anything else. So, no other recommendation from me. The only downside is that they are only generally available during the cycle promotions and sell out pretty quickly...

Depends on the depth of your pockets

I am not the best person to answer this type of question as I am very conscious about the cost.
I bought 5 base layers, Campri, from Sports Direct for £10. Yes all 5 is £10.
It works fine for me. I only cycle about 30-50 miles on one day. On tours I only do about 600 Km over 7 days. Wash well. Dry in couple of hours.

The Campri stuff is surprisingly good even although cheap. I bought a cheap (£5.99 if I remember correctly) padded jacket for walking the dog in the winter and it is the cosiest jacket I possess. Bit off topic I suppose, but just thought I would mention as cheapness doesn't always equate to poor quality.

Thanks for the advice. I called in at Aldi over the weekend but all I could find was Marino in large or above  so going to check some of the other alternatives over the weekend.

Checked the ones your recommended Vickster but my pockets aren't that deep .
