When I set off on my commute this morning I found myself weaving all over the road due to the wind. I never realised just what an effective sail pannier bags make. The ones on the front were a nightmare!

As I got up to a roundabout I stopped, unclipped my right foot, as normal. My foots almost down, the toes have just touched the floor when the wind suddenly gusts again. The wind pushes the bike back upright and my foot gets lifted off the floor. Sadly the wind didn't stop blowing when the bike was upright, it continues to push me right over. - TIMBER!!!

I knew full well what was going to happen the moment my foot was lifted off the ground but I just couldn't get my left foot out of the pedals quick enough. Over I went, straight on to my side in the middle of the road, still clipped in.

ouch, never suffered from that, never used panniers

Unlucky. I was fairly luckyish with the wind it was just a really strong head wind most of the way home and when it was a side wind it was fairly constant. I did unclip my left foot at some points expecting a strong gust but fortunately nothing came that I couldn't deal with.

plenty gusty round here as well...one of those really frustrating headwinds...almost felt like you were going backwards.

It was very very gusty yesterday, so I am not convinced that your panniers would have been that big a factor.

On my ride to the station yesterday morning I went round one corner and got hit by a really strong blast of wind that had me wobbling all over the road, with cars coming in both directions.

Fortunately I use toe clips on my commuter bike ;)
