I was really gutted to read the news Chris Hoy's awful cancer diagnosis. Combined with the double whammy of his wife's illness and the devastating effect it'll have on his young family. You know, he's always seemed like a thoroughly decent bloke and my heart really goes out to them. His attitude to his diagnosis is a real measure of the man.
I've been wanting to go cycle touring in Scotland (the home of my ancestors) for years and years. I eventually got my diary and gear together enough to plan a wee tour in the borders with my daughter Adrien in Easter, the year that covid hit us. And then at the next available opportunity I got struck down with the leukaemias. I've not stopped fettling the whole time, so I've got my ultimate dream touring bike out in the garage sat waiting for me to get back on it. Which is mucho frustrating. The health I'm in at the moment I'm not able to ride more than a couple of miles. But when Chris Hoy's Tour de 4 charity ride was mentioned a couple of months ago I signed up for the emailing list and had an email from them today saying it's going ahead. The ride is from Glasgow to Edinburgh, two cities which are of huge significance for Hoy. My Mum and Dad were from Edinburgh and Glasgow and both died of cancer, my dad of prostate cancer. So it really feels like something I can't not try to do.
So, if I'm well enough by September, I want to do the 60km ride. I'd probably do it in aid of Leukaemia Care who have been very supportive of me with bits of funding and counselling.
