I have just learned that the Skyride is returning. I havent checked the date yet but felt the need to pre-empt the usual negative letters by sending my own email into the local paper:

If the Skyrides have shown us anything in the past couple of years it is that there is indeed a demand for safe and comfortable cycling infrastructure.

The demand is clearly there. The people want to cycle, but are severely put off by motor traffic. The DfT own surveys of road users shows this to be true.

I am sure that if the Echo went along to this years Skyride and inteviewed the many who turn up, they will find that most who have not ventured out for a while, have been scared away, or feel unconfident or are quite young.

Surely now is the time to look at proper provision for cycling in the city and the UK as a whole? The demand is there and the benefits to health, personal finance, employer's parking issues, and the burden traffic congestion causes business and employees as whole must also demand it. Less cars mean smoother slowing motor traffic for those that truly do need to drive (and acording to the DfT many do not)

Many thanks!

If others wish to send in their letters of support for the Skyride, please feel free! The paper has been great lately with its encouragment of cycling. Recent articles:

A colleagues husband has just done this over the past few weeks in Hull, I had never heard about it until she mentioned it.
From her description he is going to be teaching others how to ride more safely after taking the course, is that how it works?

Sorry if this has been covered before.

The skyride is a leisure event. Its not to do with training.
